What are the initial licensing requirements in my state?
Obtain 650 education hours, pass a Board-approved exam (MBLEx, NCBTMB, NCETM or ABTE), submit a passport-style photograph, send a copy of school transcripts, and submit a fingerprint background check.
What are the licensing renewal requirements in my state?
Licenses must be renewed every two years. Show proof of 24 hours of CE. Three CE hours must be in ethics.
Are some practitioners exempt from licensure?
Persons practicing techniques that do not involve any contact with the body of the client or persons practicing techniques that involves resting the hands on the surface of the clients body without delivering pressure to or manipulation of the soft tissues.

The North Carolina legislature introduced House Bill 693, which would adopt the Interstate Massage Compact and simplify interstate massage practice. Essentially, the bill will make it easier for licensed massage therapists to work in other states. If you believe an interstate license would benefit massage therapists, write a letter to your representatives.
Due to an increase in minimum massage and bodywork education hours, the Board of Massage and Bodywork Therapy has proposed changes to core curriculum to accommodate for the additional training hours. Comments will be accepted until November 15.
