Obtain 625 education hours, pass the MBLEX or NCBTMB exam, submit a criminal background check, and proof of liability insurance.
What are the licensing renewal requirements in my state?
Licenses must be renewed every four years. Show proof of 24 hours of CE. Two CE hours must be in ethics. CE hours cannot be carried over from one renewal period to the next.
- If a license is valid for 12 months or less, no CE hours are required.
- If a license is valid for 13-24 months, 12 CE hours are required.
- If a license is valid for 25-36 months, 18 CE hours are required.
- If a license is valid for 37-48 months, 24 CE hours are required.

The Indiana State Board of Massage Therapy made a decision regarding continuing education (CE) at their July 2022 board meeting. Find out how many CE hours you need before the May 15, 2025, renewal.
The Indiana State Board of Massage Therapy's rules will be effective July 13, 2022. This means all Indiana massage therapists must be licensed by January 11, 2023. Those currently certified will automatically become licensed. Those not certified will have six months to apply for licensure.
House Bill 1289, which was passed in 2017, will create mandatory licensure in Indiana after the rules are final. Those who are currently certified will automatically roll into licensure. Those who are not certified have 183 days after the rules are final to apply through grandfathering.
We previously notified you about Indiana House Bill 1289, changing the state's massage therapist regulation system from "title protection" to mandatory licensure. The bill passed in the legislature, and has now been signed into law by the governor. There is nothing you need to do now. We are providing the information below just so that you can be informed of what the process of transitioning to mandatory licensure will be like.
