What are the initial licensing requirements in my state? 
Obtain 625 education hours, pass a nationally recognized competency exam, submit proof of current CPR, complete 2 hours of bloodborne pathogens/universal precautions education, and submit a fingerprint background check. 

What are the licensing renewal requirements in my state? 
Licenses must be renewed by September 30 of every odd-numbered year. Show proof of current CPR certification and 16 hours of CE (2 of which must be ethics) is required. A fingerprint background check is required every six years. 

Are some practitioners exempt from licensure?
Structural integration practitioners, movement and energy-awareness practitioners, Native American traditional healers, and practitioners who manipulate only the hands, feet, or ears (without representing themselves as massage therapists).

Executive Order No. 129 sought to dissolve the Alaska Board of Massage Therapists and transfer its functions to the Department of Commerce, Community, and Economic Development (DCCED). The executive order was successfully overturned.

ABMP advocated on your behalf regarding Senate Standing Committee Report 4, which would reverse an executive order that seeks to dissolve the Alaska Board of Massage Therapists. We support this legislation and invite you to read our comments and write to your elected officials.

The Alaska Board of Massage Therapists has proposed massage therapy rules that affect education and continuing education requirements. Submit written comments before December 27, 2022.
